Dean then leaves Sal behind, returning to San Francisco to fix his relationship with Camille. After recovering, Sal returns to New York. Dean says he travelled across the country by train to see Sal and that he is having another child with Camille.

Sal's friends hurry him so they can get on their way, and as Sal turns to leave, Dean asks for a lift to East 14th Street. Sal tells Dean it was good to see him, and leaves him to walk as Sal and his friends depart.

When Sal returns home that night, he is able to write his novel about his life on the road with Dean. A film adaptation of On the Road had been in development hell for decades.

In the letter, Kerouac envisioned the film to be shot "with the camera on the front seat of the car showing the road day and night unwinding into the windshield, as Sal and Dean yak.

The deal did not occur and Kerouac was angered that his agent asked for too much money. Coppola said, "I tried to write a script, but I never knew how to do it.

It's hard — it's a period piece. It's very important that it be period. Anything involving period costs a lot of money. In , Coppola hired novelist Russell Banks to write the script and planned to make the film with Joel Schumacher directing and starring Billy Crudup as Sal Paradise and Colin Farrell as Dean Moriarty, but this incarnation of the project was shelved as well.

However, while Salles was talking to MK2 Productions in Paris about other potential films, they asked Salles if he had any passion projects. Rivera then began writing the screenplay, producing approximately 20 drafts.

Later drafts relied less on the published book and more on the original manuscript, which had been typed on a foot roll of paper and kept in all the real names.

In , Salles had to convince the cast he had assembled in to remain committed to the project. Burroughs and Adams as the character's wife, Jane Joan Vollmer.

Before filming began on August 2, , in Montreal , Quebec , Canada , [12] [19] the entire cast underwent a three-week " beatnik boot camp ," according to Stewart, which involved reading literature pertaining to the Beat Generation [20] and was led by Kerouac biographer Gerald Nicosia.

He played an audio interview that was recorded in with LuAnne Henderson, Neal Cassady's wife, on whom the book's character Marylou is based.

Filming began on August 4, , in Montreal , Quebec , Canada. On the Road screened on May 23, at the Cannes Film Festival , where it was nominated for the top prize.

A shorter version, running minutes, was shown on September 6, at the Toronto International Film Festival. StudioCanal bought rights for the United Kingdom and Australia.

Early reviews of On the Road were mainly mixed, although the performance of Garrett Hedlund was often singled out for praise and Eric Gautier's photography also received favorable notice.

The website's critical consensus states: "Beautiful to look at but a bit too respectfully crafted, On the Road doesn't capture the energy and inspiration of Jack Kerouac's novel.

In the front seat of a car with Sal and Dean — all naked — she jerks off both boys with a joy that defines free spirit. Salles, an intelligent director whose films include The Motorcycle Diaries , doesn't invest On the Road with the wildness it needs for its visual style, narrative approach and leads.

This lack of wildness — the absence of danger, uncertainty or a deep feeling for the mad ones — especially hurts Dean, who despite the appealing Mr.

Hedlund, never jumps off the screen to show you how Cassady fired up Kerouac and the rest". But this real sadness can't pierce or dissipate this movie's tiresome glow of self-congratulation".

Some day someone may make a movie worthy of On the Road , but Salles wasn't the one to try. This trip goes nowhere". From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

But there was a catch. Most of the adaptation projects contemporaneous with Kerouac focussed on that and the results have never been satisfying. In fact, the book and its adaptation to the big screen haunted the Coppola family for decades.

Meaning that you buy exclusive adaptation rights on the project for two or three years. So the longer a project drags on the more you have to pay.

No business about options. It was his. Otherwise, he would eventually have dropped the project. He always believed that it would make a wonderful film.

Everything was just a matter of timing and meetings. And then Walter Salles came along eight years ago.

The book had such an iconic quality to me that the idea of adapting it never even crossed my mind. The director was Gus Van Sant.

He called and invited me to be a consultant on his movie, which I accepted with pleasure. There are obviously many ways to adapt a novel to the screen.

The project was still missing a company able to engage wholeheartdly in what for any executive producer constitutes a nightmare project: the period road movie.

After a good hour of discussions on the screenplay, directing, cinema… we were just about to leave. On the Road , like the book?

Walter took off for the airport to fly back to Brazil. We called him back the next day. He returned to Paris two weeks later with all sorts of documents accompanied by Carlos Conti, the production designer.

Miles and miles of location scouting, photos, videos, script meetings, gathering the technical crews and so on. Walter had already traveled the route taken by Kerouac and met all the figures involved in the Beat adventure and the book.

The film already existed, we just had to find it. We gave ourselves one week to reach an agreement as shooting was due to start in the summer.

This led us to seek increased legitimacy on the project, which is why we did all this research, the interviews and the trips.

Their enthusiasm and courage gave us such a boost that it soon became clear that they were the ideal partners. Sometimes the fact that a film gets made is a sheer alchemical miracle.

I think the film is the fruit of these efforts and our shared dedication to honor this beloved text. Walter Salles was born in Rio de Janeiro in and spent his childhood in France and the United States before returning to Brazil at a teenager.

Hailed by the critics, nominated for several Oscars, the film was presented In Competition at Cannes in before its hugely successful worldwide release.

Little by little, I realized that it had to do with the unique narrative form of the road movie, based in the unpredictable.

Walter Salles is confronting the origins of his love for a film genre with the literary foundations of that genre.

A road movie as a vibrant plea to rediscover the blacktop and the American territory, at a time when geographic networks are dematerializing.

Kristen Stewart in a scene from Alliance Films' 'On the. Walter Salles' "On the Road" was made with noble intentions, finely-crafted filmmaking and handsome casting, but, alas, it does not burn, burn, burn.

Salles, the Brazilian filmmaker of "The Motorcycle Diaries" and "Central Station," would seem the perfect director to translate to the screen Jack Kerouac's poetry of the road.

But this "On the Road," the first ever big-screen adaption of the Beat classic, doesn't pulse with the electric, mad rush of Kerouac's feverish phenomenon.

Salles approached the book with reverence and deep research, and perhaps that's the problem -- that its spirit got suffocated by respectfulness.

The late '40s period detail, shot by cinematographer Eric Gautier, is lush, and there is surely a very attractive montage that could be pulled from the film.

But if anything has made "On the Road" so beloved, it's not its artful composition, but its yearning: the urgent passion of its characters to break free of themselves and postwar America and feel the freedom of the road.

Salles captures the backpacks slung over hitchhiker shoulders, the rushing scenery out the car window, the sound of a dirt road underfoot.

But his film, from the screenplay by "Motorcycle Diaries" writer Jose Rivera, ultimately feels conventional: too neatly packaged and too affectedly acted.

As our Dean Moriarty, Kerouac's stand-in for Neal Cassady, Garrett Hedlund "Tron" gives his all in an ultimately failed attempt to find Moriarty's wild magnetism within him.

But he's missing the mythical spark of Moriarty and the grit of someone who grew up on the streets of Denver, stealing cars. It's worth noting how impossible a task this is, to translate "On the Road" or make flesh Moriarty.

Many have tried but it's no coincidence that it's taken this long for a film version. Certainly, we can lament that we don't instead have an "On the Road" with James Dean or Marlon Brando, both of whom once considered it.

Imagine what Judd Apatow would do with "On the Road," a bromance if there ever was one.
