Definitely check out the original movies as well. ED 1 and 2 are great, I didn't care for the rest though. This show established itself as grade-A entertainment within the first few minutes.
Before the title appeared, we got to see:. I have no complaints about it at all. Instead, I'm concerned that the rest of the show will have a challenging time keeping this level of quality.
I was really, really worried that this premier would fail to meet my unrealistically high expectations. That was glorious. I had no idea this was in the works, so I was absolutely giddy to hear about it and watch it this morning.
Ash vs. My problem is that this show leaves out Army of Darkness. In his whole exposition about what happened, they mix 1 and 2 and don't mention anything about AOD.
Which is kind of weird to me if this is supposed to be a continuation. I absolutely loved it. Hail to the king, baby. They didn't shy away from the R rating stuff, either.
There were two great parts with the ratings. The first was a moent when I thought "man, if this was a movie we'd be getting blood.
Then a "man, if this was a movie there'd be some swearing right now". And then there was swearing. I don't want that out of any need for edginess or anything.
Instead it's all about immersion. There's moments when human beings bleed, or when they should swear. And it's refreshing to actually see that portrayed on screen again.
Loved it. Was so much fun, was very under the radar for me, and felt like I was a kid again. They did a great job with the effects, they had some creepy moments even if done before the walking on ceiling, the head spin.
As well the sound mixing was great, added to the spooky ambiance. I'm glad they didn't overuse or rely on catchphrases such as this is my boomstick or give me some sugar.
They were more subtle, and will be awaiting for the use of the first one eagerly. Good writing, to actually have a story arc for this season and to be renewed for the next speaks volumes.
Damn he looks good to, not sure if an epic amount of hair dye but very different from Burn Notice and his jaw is a shining beacon in the dark.
FYI many of the most well known catch phrases such as the ones you mentioned came from AoD which means they do not the have the rights to use them.
I've seen in this thread that they plan on using it at some point, but am not getting my hopes up. Eh, what I really hope to see at one point is The Evil in it's physical form.
Like in Evil Dead 2. It worries me that they can't use it since it would only work for the ending and they could cancel the series before that happens.
Here's an interview with Bruce Campbell in which they lightly touch on this issue. Thanks, didn't know that at time, found out from the other comments.
A shame, but they have done great work so far. The first episode was exactly what I hoped it would be and more. Mixing horror and comedy is not an easy thing to do, but Raimi and Campbell pull it off like the veterans they are.
I love the fact that the show knows how to laugh at itself, and doesn't take things too seriously. The amount of fan-service was just right too.
I think the pilot, while pulling in new fans and crowds, also catered to most of the fans of the original movies too. The ending line to the episode was like a nail in the coffin, ensuring that I will be glued to my screen every time this airs.
Also a big round of applauds for Starz for not meddling with the artistic vision of the creators, and letting them do things on-screen that not many channels would.
A watered down Evil Dead -series is the worst thing I could imagine. The excess is what this franchise is all about. Great pilot!
The series betrays the film's DYI legacy by using a great deal of digital animation for the fight scenes and gore.
And as the CGI effects aren't particularly sophisticated, they give the action sequences a cheesy feel. Given the half-hour format, there is little space to develop the secondary characters.
Being that the pilot is A: 42 minutes long, B: the CGI effects are fine the way they are given its an Evil Dead series as well as a TV series and C: giving the action sequences a "cheesy feel"?
Is this guy new to Evil dead? I mean seriously being that his review is mostly bitching about horror on TV and his review feels more like a dismissal to personal personal preferences that wont ever be met in contrast to elements that made the series fun to begin with.
I'm going to guess he wont be a fan of the other 9 episodes, and thats fine. But being that this is a reintroduction to something old, as well as expanding its world beyond just 1 main character, is it that hard to enjoy something for what it is instead of what you think it should be?
I mean if its completely off the walls terrible and has nothing to offer, then yea I get it, this episode wasn't any of those. But this is just my perspective.
I'd give this an 8. Ok, I wish it was a lot longer. Been 23 years since I saw Army of Darkness in the theater and I haven't had this much fun watching something in years.
He's right about the CGI, it really disappointed me. They even used CGI blood to enhance some of the practical effects blood.
I understand using CGI for the wall-crawling and the great doll scene but why did they use it for blowing up heads and chopping off arms with an axe?
That's perfect territory for hilarious practical effects gore. Raimi talked about it in an interview. He was bummed out they had to use CGI as well.
It just had to do with TV's short production schedule. I agree. In fact, I really enjoyed the practical effects but some of the CGI blood spraying out of it was over the top.
They had no CGI and plenty of blood in the first two movies and they had a microscopic budget compared to what the show costs.
I'd prefer they just leave the CGI out of the practical effects altogether. It only serves to make it look LESS realistic.
Same with the raptors and shit in jurassic world - you have a realistic looking robot but you go ahead and CGI all of the features you want and suddenly the whole thing starts to look fake.
Practical effects work best when you enhance them with CGI, especially when you don't have a ton of time like with TV shows. The fact that they are consciously making an effort to use practical effects for things like the head turning is a great way to start.
Once their budget gets increase if they get good ratings, we'll see more of that quality of work. CGI saves a lot of production time on a shoot in all honesty, course then it takes up time in pre-production but I didn't mind the CGI.
It wasn't seamless, but it was still enjoyable. I mean hell there one CGI shot that was flawless is the one no one was talking about, and thats Ash dancing around his trailer in the opening and you see he's clearly missing a hand instead of the old way of them wrapping the right hand up with something.
Who knows? If season 1 does better in the ratings maybe seasons 2 will have a higher budget? I mean some of the stuff here looked better that some of the CGI gore and shit on the first 2 seasons of the Walkign dead.
Since when have Evil Dead special effects ever been top of the line? As nice as it would be to see them as seamless marvels of movie magic, thats a higher budget than what they're working with obviously.
He passes the stump end in front of his body and face and the space being where his hand would be looks completely normal. I saw that, Wowed, and wondered how big the special effects budget was As far as the CGI effects go, they're on par for a tv show..
I guess the different is that in 6 seasons Walking Dead hasn't reached anywhere near the quality of this episode. As far as I could tell it seemed like they used practical effects as often as they feasibly could.
I knew the very bare basics of the movies and I got through it without confusion. Except for some of the weird stuff the dead do!
Thats how I see it too. They're an extension of evil magic, and magic doesnt have to operate logically. It might be a little bit confusing at first, but they recap the movies midway through the first ep.
And it's basically that Ash survived a horror movie 30 years ago. And now the big bad is back. You're good to go. Now go watch the movies because they're fucking awesome and you'll be a better human being for having watched them.
He seems really flippant for a guy who watched all the people he cared about die in front of his eyes. Is this his way of coping or just how he is normally?
You can tell that he is pretty cynical and beat down about it. He almost ignores the fact that it happened to him, and it looks like he has been pretty reclusive all these years in terms of actual friendships.
In the first movie he's kind of a wimp, after his friends and his girlfriend die and then after he gets possessed in the second movie he kind of goes nuts in the middle of the second one and from then on he's a flippant cynic in the second half of The Evil Dead 2 and the third movie, Army of Darkness.
We've never really met Ash when he wasn't being attacked by the forces of evil, so it's hard to say. But to quote a bit from Army of Darkness, "Are all men from the future loud mouthed braggarts?
Just me. He's not a superhero, or a Navy Seal. He's just an everyman who has a bad habit of doing the wrong thing or saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.
Hell, look at how the evil was released in the first place. It's good to know Sam Raimi can still be himself in his 20ss when he wants to.
This wasn't exactly George Miller on Fury Road, but it was pretty close. Speaking of which, nice that the original Evil Dead crew got a shout out as a thank you at the end of the credits.
This was indeed perfect, and felt like a true continuation of the film series. I was disappointed to hear that Raimi only directed episode 1, and hope the other directors can capture his classic kinetic style.
I read in a review Raimi didn't have the rights to army of darkness, which is why the store was changed from S mart as well. Literally, my only issue with the pilot was that Ash wasn't working at S-Mart.
At least now I know why that's the case. AoD's place is unclear. It sounds like the show does not have the legal rights to mention it I'm unsure of the current situation, but it sounds like the show only got rights to the Evil Dead movies.
I assume AoD's canon unless directly proven otherwise. Where did Scotty go? Don't worry about it. It has to be canon, his hand had the attachment for the chainsaw, that didn't come till Army of Darkness.
Before that it was just ducktape. My guess is that he doesn't reference it to save time. It's already enough to dump on Pablo "the book of the dead" without saying "btw I took this detour into a medieval realm!
It's "Duct tape". It's tape, for ducts. Why would tape be named after ducks? But he doesn't have the gauntlet from AoD, which would serve him much better than a wooden hand.
And he had the attachment at the end of Evil Dead 2, which was made out of some stuff they found in the shed outside. He used duct tape on the wound.
Yeah but if Evil Dead 2 is canon, then he still goes back in time at the end, so Army of Darkness would have to lead in to it. He got back to Michigan somehow.
I just want to know how he got the Necronomicon back. They aren't allowed to have anything related to Army of Darkness on the tv show but it did happen.
So, I was super-hyped about this show when they announced it. As it got closer and closer, I just got more excited. When I watched the trailer ten million times I thought my head was going to explode.
There was no way the show could possibly live up to my expectations. I had over-hyped it in my head. And it blew my fucking mind. It gave me everything I wanted and more.
There wasn't a single moment of disappointment in the show except when I realized that it was almost over.
Every single scene was either funny, exciting, important to establish characters, or all of the above. When the credits started to roll, I was surprised; it felt like I had just started watching.
I think that will improve once her storyline picks up and intersects with Ash and Co. That's very true. I hope she intersects with Ash quickly because lets face it, he's the main reason everybody is watching.
For those wondering about the continuity of the show, it's a little complex, so here's my understanding:. In interviews they said Army of Darkness did occur, but they just can't legally reference any of it.
Oh is that the case? Damn, that puts them in an awkward situation, having to ignore the not insignificant ramifications of an entire movie.
Arguably the most popular movie too. Yeah, that's why he has the chainsaw attachment for his hand. In the Evil Dead 2 he just used duct tape to attach the chainsaw.
They had to do the exact same thing in Evil Dead 2. You know, where only Ash and Linda went to the cabin, no Ash's sister, no Scotty, no I forget what Scotty's girl was named, and I refuse to Google it right now.
