Although Dhuoda’s advice to her son is more spiritual than secular, there is plenty of the latter to go around–and many of the examples Dhuoda puts in for her son can be read as criticisms of the behavior of the high and mighty fpr court, particularly the three sons of the emperor Charlemagne.
The easy-to-read book is an excellent description of daily life for the nobility. Of her sons, William was killed inBernard in No formal hansbook training.
But I’m interested in Medieval History, particularly from the 4th through 9th centuries and I read about it – a lot. Dhuoda’s situation was poignant. The Carolingians and the Written Word.

We know little about Dhuoda other than handdbook she very likely came ror a wealthy family and was well educated.
She dwells on family relations, social order, the connection between religious and military responsibility, and, always, the central place of Christian devotion in a noble life. This had an added, unexpected benefit. So good that I did something I rarely do and printed off two articles to read more closely, one by Cullen Chandler and another by Jonathan Jarrett. Articles incorporating a citation from the Catholic Encyclopedia with Wikisource reference CS1 maint: Very good article that I enjoyed tremendously.

Because of this power, Dhuoda and Bernard’s son, William, was held handook at the court of Charles the Baldwhile their other son Bernard lived with his father in Aquitaine. The manuscript also includes other texts available to 9th century Carolingians and contains topics related to those included in the Handbook.
Dhuoda wrote the Liber Manualis for her son William, whom she entreated to share the work with his younger brother when he became older. In essence, it is a strong possibility, perhaps even likely, that Dhuoda sent all of these texts to her son in an effort to engage him in a fairly standard Carolingian educational program. The Barcelona manuscript is a 14th century copy of an earlier work.
